While I was out. . .
Posted by Bill on Sunday, September 27, 2009 at 6:25pm
The past 2 months have been difficult.  Until about 2 weeks ago, the majority of my time has been spent waiting on WinePress to help me with my formatting issues or other details.

I finally received my final copyedit advice about a week ago, and I just sent back my manuscript for (I hope) the last time. If all goes well it will be sent to the typesetter from there--a process that is supposed to take about three weeks.

God has been dealing with me and my impatience for this process, and I don't like it. But I realize He is always trying to teach me, and that His plan and His will are perfect. I will continue to pray for wisdom, patience, and the desire to see His name glorified through the book, and not my own.

You can't judge a book by its cover

But a book still needs one, and as of today Dear Editor has a cover! Not sure when it will show up at the top of this here blog page, but my book has a cover.

My Project Manager has told me to submit an author photo, so now I gotta fork out $2 at the Foto Fun Booth kiosk in Jefferson Mall. The good news is I'll get 4 chances to get it right.

How do I decide which Hawaiian shirt best says, "Pensive, yet resolute"?

Episode VIII: A New Hope

Finally got an encouraging word from my coach, who says he will be able to re-format my entire manuscript for me (including the pending Foreword) within his alotted time. In fact, he says he is almost completely finished.

This makes me happy.

On the other hand, I'm not having as much luck getting answers from George, my Program Manager.

This makes me less than happy.

Meanwhile, I continue to pray for God's wisdom and His blessings on this project. In my limited human understanding, frustration and impatience are the natural responses to circumstances that don't fit within "my" plans. Only when I truly put my burdens in His hands do I receive peace.

Thanks, God, and help me listen to what You are trying to teach me through the process of publishing this book.

The wa-aiting

Is the har-dest part

The manuscript, except for the Foreword, is essentially complete in terms of content. Unfortunately, we have not been able to resolve the style issues referred to in my last post. So, I'll be sending the manuscript to my coach soon for him to work his mojo on (hopefully within the limits of his remaining contractually obligated time!). Meanwhile, I've also sent my PM several questions regarding other aspects of the book: author photo (shudder), outside cover text, 2nd pass on my cover art, etc.

I have seen the future of my road to book-in-hand, and it looks like a large, sparsely furnished room stocked with magazines and back issues of Reader's Digest. And a gray-haired lady at the reception desk--formidable, yet not unkind--who occasionally glances at my name on the oversized sign-in clipboard and then gives me that sad, implacable smile that says, "Settle in, sonny-boy. I hope you packed a lunch."

Sigh.

little problem or BIG problem?

The good news is I'm pretty happy with my writing progress. I would estimate I am more than 90% towards a completed manuscript. At this point it is mainly tweaking and refining, and trying to really hawk those pesky style and grammatical issues.

About those pesky style issues. . .

The (potential) bad news is that my lack of manuscript experience might be preparing to masticate me in the toukas. I'm waiting to hear from my coach whether some formatting problems we've found are correctable through Word processes that I just don't know about, or whether I'm going to have to spend a LOT of time going over my whole manuscript to correct them.

Here's to praying for option A and preparing for option B. I should hear back from my coach Lee any day.
